From HCG Diets to Shake Weights: Fitness Trends in Review

From HCG Diets to Shake Weights: Fitness Trends in Review

From HCG Diets to Shake Weights: Fitness Trends in Review

Buzz up!41 votes

From tapeworms and Thighmasters to fad diets and blubber-shaking machinery, the only sure thing in the fitness world is that there will always be a new trend claiming to be the secret to quick and easy weightloss or eternal youth. Often, these fads make unrealistic promises or are downright unhealthy. Sometimes, though, trends bubble up for a reason—because they work. Here’s a look at five current fitness trends and my suggestions as to whether you should “hit it” or “quit it.”

HCG Diet: Fad diets are a dime a dozen. All the ones that “work” use the same trick: They have some loosely-tested medical theory that distracts you from the fact that you are just doing good old calorie cutting. This is true of most low-carb and non-medically-indicated gluten-free diets, and it’s certainly true with the HCG diet. In its truest form, the HCG diet requires daily injections of a hormone found in pregnant women that is supposed to help release fat stores. Of course, the internet has sprung up with sites offering to sell you HCG in pill form. But HCG is not active in an oral form, so the pills you find on the internet are pure placebos. In either case, the HCG is more or less a red herring anyway. The real way the HCG diet “works”—you are only allowed 500 calories per day! Yes, you read that right—500 calories. Of course you are going to lose weight in the short-term, but a 500-calorie diet is something one should never undertake without the strictest of doctor’s supervision.

The Verdict: Quit It. If you want to lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn by creating a sustainable deficit, which can be done by anyone, anywhere, for free! If you must, you can take a few twenty-dollar bills out of your wallet and flush them down the toilet for motivation, which would be better than spending your hard-earned cash on this internet gimmick.

P90X: The saying goes, “At any given time, there is an episode of I Love Lucy playing somewhere in the world.” I think the same is probably true of the P90X infomercial—possibly twofold. The parade of jaw-dropping transformations and well-oiled “after shots” just reek of scam. But, you know what…? The hype machine of the infomercial doesn’t change the fact that P90X is a really solid, well-rounded, old-school weight and cardio program that will deliver great results to anyone who has the dedication to push themselves through the workouts and, most importantly, reel in their diet. It delivers the same kind of solid workout experience you can get from taking several classes at a gym, which makes it ideal for parents and people who like the flexibility of working out at home. (One caveat: If you are a woman looking to lose weight, it’s likely the nutrition guide that comes with the program will suggest far too many calories. Here are some suggestions for alterations.)

The Verdict: Hit it! Just don’t expect that something magical will happen when the UPS man delivers the package to your door. As with any workout program, you’ll need the commitment to hit the workouts hard and change your diet to see results.

Shake Weight: Due to a so-bad-it's-good advertising campaign, the Shake Weight has become a viral video darling and even landed a starring role on an episode of South Park. But, is it any good as a workout tool? Hardly. I purchased the Shake Weight in the “for men” size and ran through the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it enclosed workout DVD. For starters, I can think of very little that would actually “get you ripped in only 6 minutes per day” aside from deadlifting a small SUV repeatedly. And, while I did have difficulty shaking the weight for the specified period, I’m chalking that up to a slippery handle and biomechanically-shaky moves. I felt no delayed muscle soreness that would indicate that the workout had done anything different from my usual weight regime. Plus, it works only three muscle groups, and there’s certainly not enough weight involved in any case to “get you ripped.” In fact, I’d argue good ole pushups, dips, and pull-ups would do a much better job of that than this noisy gizmo.

The Verdict: Quit It. Spend your thirty bucks on a pair of 20-pound dumbbells that you can use for curls, presses, squats, and lunges to get a full-body workout. Bonus tip: If you want to get the whole Shake Weight experience with your dumbbells, just stop your curl or press mid-way through the rep and do micropulses or hold the isometric contraction for 30 seconds. Oh, and make funny faces. That’s the important part.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): High Intensity Interval Training is the talk of the gym, promising to burn the most calories in the least amount of time and elevating post-exercise calorie burn for up to 24 hours after the session. HIIT is a great addition to most workout programs, and all these claims are backed by solid research, but here’s the thing—most people don’t do HIIT right. It’s more than just hitting the “interval” button on the elliptical while reading the latest copy of Cosmo. A true HIIT workout session involves a warm-up followed by one minute of all-out intensity and one minute of recovery, repeated no more than 10 times, and followed by a cool down. To be true HIIT, the all-out bursts must be can’t-go-for-a-second-longer intervals, and at the end of the 20-30 minute session you should be absolutely beat.

The Verdict: Hit it! High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to get the most out of your workout time. Remember, though, that a true HIIT will leave you utterly depleted and require proper recovery, so don’t do this kind of workout on back-to-back days. Also, don’t put too much weight on the promise of increased post-exercise burn—any workout program will do this. Just focus on blasting through those calories in the workout timeframe and consider any additional benefits as gravy. I tell my clients: With HIIT, if you don’t feel like a flailing fool in the gym, you probably aren’t doing it right.

High-Antioxidant Drinks and Supplements (Acai Berry, Pomegranate, etc.): It seems that anti-oxidants have been added to so many products these days, promising everything from better heart health to eternal youth. Notably, the beverage aisle is jam-packed with high-antioxidant drinks, but most of these drinks are nothing more than expensive fruit punch, with little to offer than massive quantities of sugar and some vitamins tossed in to make for better marketing. Yes, a diet sufficiently high in anti-oxidants is important for good health, but a well-rounded diet full of multi-colored foods will not only provide you more than enough vitamins and minerals, it will contain other important phytonutrients and fiber naturally. I am always wary of artificially adding nutrients to our food outside the ratio of what you’d find in a healthy, well-balanced diet. There is even some evidence that too many anti-oxidants might reduce the positive adaptations to exercise.

The Verdict: Quit it! Don’t reach for a pricy, sugary, calorie-bomb just because it claims to have anti-oxidants or other health benefits. If you are eating a well-rounded, colorful diet, you are probably doing fine on the anti-oxidant front. Try as we might, we really can’t improve on water for drinking.

If you’ve got a fitness trend you’d like me to investigate, drop me a note.

Beachbody: Thinking Beyond the Infomercial - BusinessWeek

Beachbody: Thinking Beyond the Infomercial - BusinessWeek

Horton promises pain and perspiration—and it sells

Tony Horton has trained senators, soldiers, and celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen and Billy Idol. In the past three weeks, the latter-day Jack LaLanne has been to six states to promote his grueling in-home fitness program, P90X. Soon, Horton is off to Japan and France for training sessions, his first book will be published in December, and he's shopping around a reality TV show. "The first five months of the year I slept in my own bed only 50 times," Horton says. "It's pretty crazy."

P90X, flogged countless times daily on cable TV, is an anomaly in direct marketing. Most of the pills and potions seen on infomercials seem to offer physical perfection with little effort. Horton, by contrast, has persuaded 3 million people to pay $140 for his 12-DVD program by promising three months of pain and perspiration in a routine that combines resistance training, yoga, boxing, weight lifting, and a strict diet.

At age 52, 5 feet, 11 inches, and 175 pounds, Horton can do 35 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, and climb a 25-foot rope upside down while barely breaking a sweat. In the videos, Horton combines the discipline of a drill sergeant with a touch of humor left over from a youthful flirtation with stand-up comedy. What Horton calls muscle confusion—a series of varied workouts targeting different muscle groups at different times—seems to work. Initially, "I would do the leg workout and wouldn't be able to walk the next two days," says Liz Beebe, a 29-year-old actress from Los Angeles. "But once you start, you get hooked."

Now that it has built a loyal customer base, Beachbody, the Santa Monica (Calif.) company that sells P90X, knows it needs to figure out what's next. It has sold $420 million worth of P90X DVDs since they were introduced in 2005, and buyers of the program will drive nearly half of Beachbody's $430 million in revenue this year. Problem is, P90X sales growth has slowed in recent years, from 85 percent in 2008 to about 30 percent this year. "Fitness is very much like fashion," says Carl Daikeler, chief executive officer of Beachbody. "The important thing is that the company continue to learn from the marketplace."

One thing Beachbody has learned is that P90X isn't for everyone. So the company is introducing programs for the elderly, teens, and the religious (Body Gospel, a program set to church music). Next year, Horton will star in a revision of a less intense P90X variant called Power90, as well as a tougher version for die-hard fitness nuts. And Beachbody has created Spanish-language P90X videos, something it plans to do for its entire product line.

The company is also stepping up a direct-sales initiative called Team Beachbody in which people market products to friends and get a share of the revenues (and a piece of commissions earned by other salespeople they recruit). The plan is paying off: Shakeology, a meal-replacement drink sold only by direct sales, is Beachbody's fastest-growing product.

Daikeler expects Team Beachbody revenue to reach $200 million in 2011, up from $35 million last year. "Long term, more people are likely to buy from friends and family members who got results vs. people who are going to buy from an infomercial," he says. Half of P90X buyers have never even seen a commercial for the DVDs, he says.

Finally, Beachbody is trying to broaden its appeal. The company's website sells P90X drinks, protein supplements, chin-up bars, and other spin-offs. "If you look at direct marketing folks that aren't on television anymore," Horton says, "what they didn't do is work on building their brand."

The bottom line: After racking up $420 million in sales of P90X DVDs, Beachbody is seeking to reduce its dependence on the smash-hit fitness program.

New York man ordered to pay $2.1 million for selling pirated P90X videos

New York man ordered to pay $2.1 million for selling pirated P90X videos

November 17, 2010 | 11:58 am

The Santa Monica company that markets the popular fitness video program P90X has won a $2.1-million judgment against a New York man it said was selling pirated copies of its DVDs on the Internet.

U.S. District Judge John F. Walter in Los Angeles ordered Wayne Batchelor of Uniondale, N.Y., to pay the damages to Product Partners, which distributes the fitness videos through its Beachbody brand. He also ordered Batchelor to “deliver immediately for destruction” all counterfeit P90X materials in his possession.

Horton In its lawsuit, Product Partners said its P90X brand had gained a devoted following because of a massive television marketing campaign. The company said it spent “close to $100 million” in 2009 to promote the P90X brand in TV infomercials.

In recent years, the company has been victimized by "unscrupulous individuals and entities who wish to take a free ride" on its "goodwill, reputation and fame” by selling pirated copies of its fitness DVDs, it said in the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

The P90X fitness program, developed by Tony Horton, is available on Beachbody’s website for $119.85. According to the lawsuit, Batchelor advertised pirated copies of the fitness DVDs on EBay. A private investigator hired by Product Partners purchased a counterfeit copy of the fitness system in December 2009 from Batchelor for $47.99, the lawsuit said.

Between November 2009 and January 2010, Batchelor sold 129 sets of the counterfeit videos, the company said, citing records that Batchelor provided.

Batchelor did not file a response to the lawsuit, prompting Walter to enter a judgment in favor of Product Partners. He could not be reached for comment.

The Truth About Shakeology and Ecdysteroids

From the Team Beachbody News Letter

Shakeology® is nature in a bag. Unfortunately, technology isn't always able to see the forest for the trees–or in this case, the roots from the trees.

Recently, the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) and the National Football League (NFL) released a new list of nationally banned substances. And because current drug screening technologies are unable to differentiate between natural, healthy substances and synthetic banned substances, the list now encompasses a group of all-natural phyto-chemical compounds known as ecdysteroids, which are found in various plants around the globe. There are 150 different kinds of ecdysteroids, and ecdysterone is one of them.

THE FACTS Ecdysterone can be found in several plants, including the immune-boosting herb Suma Root, sometimes referred to as "Brazilian Ginseng." In addition to ecdysterone, the powerful Suma Root contains over 19 different natural and bio-active compounds, including amino acids, electrolytes, trace minerals, iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A, B1, B2, E, K, and pantothenic acid. In other words, it's a miracle root.

Suma Root is one of the 70 ingredients found in Shakeology.

The root of the issue: Since the ecdysterone found in Suma Root can be erroneously detected as a banned synthetic substance, Beachbody® is advising athletes and anyone subject to banned substances testing to consult their physician and athletic organization before consuming Shakeology.

THE BOTTOM LINE Beachbody firmly stands behind every globally researched and hand-picked ingredient in Shakeology. And while Shakeology does NOT contain any stimulants, or artificial or controlled substances, it does contain Suma Root (Pfaffia paniculata)—an herb shown to significantly increase protein synthesis in muscle as well as help lower cholesterol and balance blood sugar levels. Many additional benefits of Suma Root are well-documented and supported by scientific research.

FIGHTING THE FRESHMAN 15

#424 9/8/2010 FIGHTING THE FRESHMAN 15 - Newsletters

Watch Out! The Freshman 15 Isn't Just for Freshmen
By Steve Edwards

Back-to-school time doesn't just affect students. It's the time of year when everything changes—for everyone. The days shorten, it cools off, we get really busy, and the holidays are looming around the corner. As opposed to those frivolous days of summer, your schedule is now probably booked. In short, it's the easiest time of the year to let your health slide.

Young Woman Looking at a Fit Body

This is when it's important to remember that the "freshman 15" isn't just for freshmen. All of us—students or not—face these seasonal lifestyle adjustments, and the lapses in fitness and healthy diet that accompany them, every year. Autumn is beautiful, but it's also the toughest season to transition through. Here are 10 ways to make it to New Year's without having to make a resolution to spend all or part of next year fixing what went off the rails during the fall.

1. Schedule your exercise. One of the most difficult adjustments to make during the fall is getting used to less daylight. As the days shorten, it seems as though you've got fewer hours during which to schedule your activities. When you come home from work in the dark, it hurts your psyche. And it's tough to believe that 7:00 PM is really no different than it was during July, when you still had 2 hours of daylight left. Then there's the cold factor. Even if you work out indoors, it's so much easier to get back under your warm covers or bundle up and sit in front of a fire or the TV than it is to force a workout. Just remember that exercising makes you warm. It also keeps you fit and healthy and is the best thing you can do with cold and flu season right around the corner. Schedule your daily workout like it's part of your job, and stick to it.
2. Man SleepingSchedule your sleep. As our days get busier, we tend to push projects later and later into the evening. To fuel those longer hours, we eat . . . and eat. This is one major cause of the freshman 15: the infamous all-nighter. A recent study showed that when doctors are doing their residencies and are forced to work extremely long hours, famously foregoing sleep in the process, they gain an average of more than 20 pounds. As available daylight decreases, it's common to find yourself making alterations in your daily schedule, with sleep often losing out, so schedule your sleep just like you do your work and exercise.
3. Plan your meals. Plan your weekly meals ahead of time so you don't resort to unhealthy "convenience" foods. If your schedule is insane during the week, try taking an hour or two on Sunday to shop and strategize. Put healthy meal and snack options in your car, your office, your backpack, or anywhere you're likely to find yourself hungry. Trust me, the energy you get on the back end of this planning will far exceed the time it takes to plan, especially when you consider how you'll feel if your diet is fueled by fast food.
4. Carry water everywhere. When we're busy, we'll often forget to drink water, especially as the weather cools off. Then, in a dehydrated state, we often confuse thirst for hunger and eat. Avoid this by ensuring that there's water everywhere you go. Carry a water bottle and refill it at every opportunity. Have an extra bottle in your car, your backpack, at your desk, etc., and behave as if you're in a race each day. Force yourself to drink a glass of water every hour that you're working or studying.
5. Be realistic about alcohol. Another big contributor to the freshman 15, alcohol, is very high in calories (7 calories/gram) and very low in nutritional value. Every drink you consume is about 200 calories of nutrition that you aren't getting from your diet, or that you're consuming additional calories—overeating—to replace. And this is before we consider the calories you need to consume getting rid of a hangover. If you're a drinker, you'll never be faced with more temptation than during the fall. So plan for it. Prior to going out, consider the number of drinks you want to allow yourself and stick to it. Another helpful tip is to carry that water bottle with you socially as well and drink a bottle for every cocktail you have. This will help fill you up so you aren't drinking alcohol to quench your thirst, which happens often at social events. Drinking that water will also keep you hydrated and minimize the effects of your hangover. One other helpful hangover cure is to have a glass of P90X Results and Recovery Formula® at night after you've been drinking. Consuming these calories right before bed may be not be ideal, but it'll minimize the damage the alcohol will do to your body, which should lead to less overeating and more productivity the next day.
6. Plan for parties. Parties happen—and there's not much you can do about it. Even if you aren't social, the party will find you. Many offices are like the one in that Seinfeld episode where the coworkers find any excuse to celebrate, usually with cake or other sugary treats. And with fall comes many such opportunities to indulge. Beginning with Oktoberfest, you'll find a never-ending string of perfectly good excuses to ruin your health that last right through New Year's. Plan ahead and decide just which occasions will be worth the indulgence. That way, you'll be fully armed with reasons when your coworkers show up in your office singing, "Get well, get well soon . . ."
7. Begin a morning ritual. One of the easiest ways to live a healthy lifestyle is to begin each day by doing something positive. During the summer, we often let this slide because, well, we can. With long warm days to look forward to, there always seems to be time to do something energetic. As the days shorten, making the effort to be healthier takes more discipline. Beginning each day with something healthy, even something as brief as a 5-minute ritual (See "Good Day Sunshine" in the Related Articles section below) of breathing deeply, stretching, and thinking about positive things you want to accomplish with your day, can give you a whole new outlook.
8. Find a healthy nighttime ritual. Many of us undo an entire day's productivity in the last few hours before bed. This is particularly true when we're busy and/or stressed because we want to unwind, which often means cocktails and/or desserts in front of the TV. If you can find a healthier way to unwind, you'll do yourself a world of good. And even if you can't get away from the cocktail/dessert/TV habit, adding something at its end, instead of just sacking out, can reverse much of the damage. Stretching in front of the TV is one of the easiest ways to make that transition. Following up your stretching with herbal tea and some relaxing reading can have you hitting the sack with a much more positive attitude. Another way to help yourself get in that positive ready-for-bed headspace? Yoga Booty Ballet® Master Series Pajama Time or the Yoga Booty Ballet Relax and Unwind bedtime meditation CD, both of which are designed with end-of-day relaxation in mind.
9. Woman Writing in a JournalMake a positive New Year's resolution now. Instead of waiting until New Year's to undo and repair the damage caused by a fall-into-winter slide away from your fitness goals, make a resolution to get there, starting today, with improved fitness and health. Just think about how much better your goals can be for next year if you finish this year on a positive note. Why put yourself through the work of digging yourself out of a hole you make deeper from now through the end of the year? Instead, set yourself up, beginning right now, to have a banner New Year.
10. Cut yourself some slack. You can't be perfect, and, frankly, who wants to be? You've got to live. By planning ahead with goals in mind, you'll be far more able to relax about the holiday season, and maybe even enjoy it a little, too. So make a plan and do your best to stick with it, but don't forget to make enjoying the season and having some fun part of that plan.

Mastering portion control will give you more control over your body and your life. Whether you're at a restaurant, at home, at work, or at a party, there's no excuse. You have the power to set yourself up for success. Being mindful of your portions will help you feel better right after each meal, which will help you manage your weight more effectively. You'll learn how to enjoy your favorite foods, boost your health, and even save some cash by eating less. Now isn't that worth a little bit of effort and planning ahead?

Owning your WHY

I was thinking today, why is it that people create a "Why", or "desire" for doing something, anything? Think about it for a second. Since I'm a fitness guys I'll stick with what I know and am passionate about.

People decide that they need to get into better shape. They know they need to, age keeps on moving forward, life keeps on pushing on and their health keeps degrading a little at a time until one day, they DECIDE to change it all. They DECIDE to do something different, something they may not have done in YEARS! We've all done that one or twice in our lives.

So you get up one morning, DECIDE today is the day you're going to lose those extra pounds, start eating better and take control of your life!

What happens next?

For most people they'll start to run or get back to that gym they've been paying a membership to these last few years or join a gym.

The runners, they'll get out there and pound away at the pavement, maybe 3 or 4 times that first week, not really having a plan but they know that their why is so they start. Problem is that without a plan how can you possibly succeed? These folks will get tired, sore, hurt or frustrated because they've been putting in the time on the road and just not seen the fast results they had expected.

The gym people will head to the local gym sign up for whatever membership deal is going on, and then walk into "The Gym". You can always tell the new people at a gym, they sort of look lost, not because they're actually in a gym but because they really don't know where to start. There is so much "stuff" at a gym that it can be overwhelming. These folks will probably head to a tread mill or elliptical machine and get 20-30 min of cardio it and then maybe head to the free weights....and on it goes.

I get asked this a lot! How can I lose 20 lbs or 30, or more? My answer, clean up your nutrition and focus on a fitness routine you can be successful with.
It's simple right? Get a plan in place, expect it to be HARD, and stick with it for the long haul. That doesn't mean you should do P90X, in fact if you may not be ready for P90X, that's not to say you can't do it it's just a lot harder for folks to be successful with P90X right away when they haven't got the habit of working out and eating right already defined as a habit.

My recommendations are to find something you'll do and have fun with AND see results with. It could be a Beachbody program, or something else, I don't care what it is but DO IT, and mix it up. Keep your workouts different, fresh and fun to do. The more you do that the better your chances are that you'll create that health and wellness habit for the long term, and THATS what it's all about. If you need help figuring out what works for you, I'd be happy to help or feel free to check out www.bradeickman.com for more information. If you'd like some suggestions on what you're already doing, I'd be happy to give you my two cents.

So...Do you OWN your why?

One Arm Ball Push up...Bring It

So I've been messing around with putting some of my own workouts together, a lot with stability and basketballs. The One on One workout coming out is called "Chest, Back, & Balls", so taking from that I put one together. Here's the last push-up move in the rotation. If you'd like to try the workout, I've got it posted on my Facebook page.

P90X & Beachbody reviewed on CNBC's Power Lunch

No puff piece here. This is all about the financials and keeping it real. P90X is hard and not a couple times a week program, that's why it works!

BTW, the workouts aren't all 90 minutes long, they're between 60-75 minutes when you include Ab RipperX, but that's still shorter then most people spend going to and from the gym...when they actually go to the gym.

An answer to America's Obesity Crisis

Here's one way to help solve the obesity problem in America. It's not drugs, surgeries,, government program, pills, potions or processed foods! It's simple PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY stuff.

This works every time it's followed! 100% effective! I like to call it ownership of YOU with NO EXCUSES!

If you know me you'll know I'm passionate about health and fitness and you also know that I can be a bit "rough around the edges", but it's not because I don't care, it's because I DO CARE that I'm willing to say the things so many people are unwilling to. I do need to work on my approach and delivery but I'm hoping people understand that I mean well and it's not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings. But this is serious stuff!

I spoke with a friend of mine today, he's 55 years old and a golf pro here in town. He's struggled with his weight to a certain extent in the past as well as he has high blood pressure for which he's been on medication for 6+ years. I haven't spoken to him in several months but I called him today just to check in and say hi. He told me that in March he was at a golf tournament and had a massive heart attack and collapsed, if it hadn't been for one of the other golf coaches who administered CPR he would have died right there on the spot! He was life flighted to a Sacramento area hospital, he flat lined twice! Hes one of the 1 percenters who make it through one of these! Scary stuff don't you think?!

Now I don't know his full history but I do know that he wasn't physically active, that he didn't eat healthy and that he suffered from high stress, all of these contributed to the crash! Now he's on the long road to recovery. He's got his second chance at it, unfortunately so many others don't get that chance.

If you're looking for excuses, you don't have to go to far to find some news story proclaiming that being overweight isn't your fault, but we all know that just BS. Again, I'm sorry to be so direct but every time I hear or read these stories I want to scream.

I understand that in some rare cases there's medical reasons for weight gain, such as reactions to medications, etc., but I don't buy off on the assumption that 200 Million Americans are now overweight or obese because they have a genetic predisposition to it!

If you're serious about getting fit, if you're serious about losing weight, all you've got to do is pick up a mirror and you'll see who's responsible for turning things around. It's not a personal trainer, its not a gym membership, it's not buying a fitness program, its YOU! If you can't Commit and participate in your own rescue then you'll struggle the rest of your life.

Okay, now for an answer, it's not THE answer but it's one of them. Contact me or your Team Beachbody coach after you've watched this if you're someone looking for help or have someone close to you who could use a little help or if you're looking to help others and this seems interesting to you, call or email me. What do you have to lose? Time to get that Slight Edge working in YOUR FAVOR!

Any questions?

Business Briefing & Home Party Success!

I sent this out to my team of coaches who opted into my Coach Team News Letter, http://bit.ly/TeamCoachRegister but just had to post it here as well.

-----------------------
What an AMAZING weekend of learning and stepping outside our comfort zones!

After much procrastination and hesitation on my part I finally held the first local Business Opportunity meeting in my area. Talk about a learning experience. I found that the venue isn't going to work! To bright a room, its got an odd shape making it difficult to set up chairs, it's to loud, even tho its in a library! I also learned that the laptop I used isn't up to the task. All these things you may think made the briefing a failure right? WRONG! I found out what didn't work and what worked and how to make it all better. I was able to do the briefing, (once my laptop came to life), and practice makes perfect!

I'm fired up! I'll be scheduling a new briefing that will start right after I get back from Summit. It be at a different venue on a different day, and by doing the presentation I just get better!

Now for the Home Party event! Team member, Angie Clark is a personal trainer who just became a coach a little over two weeks ago. She wanted to have a home party to introduce her clients to Beachbody's solutions, but she was reluctant, nervous and just unsure about how it would all go. She sat in on last week's Nationwide Coach Call where Carl said, "if you're looking to start a fit club or home party, do it! What are you waiting for, it doesn't have to be perfect". Angie said, "He was talking to ME"!

We got on the phone and she set it all up and it was a SMASHING SUCCESS! I came away PUMPED! Angie is fired up! Look out, this is a woman ON THE MOVE!

Here's the email she sent to me last night:

---------------
Well my 1st home party has officially come and gone and WOW was it fun! I was so dang nervous and apprehensive about how my clients were going to respond to both the products and the business opportunity but I had nothing to worry about. I could not believe how easy it was to get the information communicated to them via the Solutions DVD especially the Shakeology segment. We simply shared our stories and experience with Beachbody and why we're passionate about the products and the business. That sharing and the 3rd party tools lead 4 of my clients to literally throw down their credit cards as I signed them all up as coaches right then, right on my own computer. How totally cool is that!!!

So after 25 invites, 10 shows, 4-5 shakeology customers, and 4 coaches (well 5 if you count my husband who I finally signed up) - THAT IS A GREAT DAY and VERY SUCCESSFUL PARTY! I can't thank you enough!! I'll just keep on keepin' on and that'll re-pay ya. ;0)
---------------

Success is just on the other side of uncomfortable! Angie was the only person standing in the way of her OWN success. She was waiting for things to be perfect and by waiting SHE was contributing to her own LACK of success. Let the Game Plan and the 3rd party tools do what they're designed to do, they simply inform those who are interested in learning more.

If you don't have the 3rd party tools, get them! They're available in your coach store under Coaches Items. If you've been waiting to have a home party or start a business briefing, what are you waiting for?

Congratulations to Angie and her new team of coaches! Angie will be Emerald on Thursday, but don't look for her to be Emerald for long, heck I wouldn't be surprised if Angie isn't attending the Diamond Coach reception at this year's Summit!

Step outside your comfort level!

Just reflecting a bit on the day, WOW! What a fantastic day!

We had perfect weather, me and the kids did our part to clean up around the public library and local creeks on Earth Day with the Scouts.

Suzette & I had a successful Biz Op meeting.

I welcomed a new member to the ever growing team of Team Beachbody coaches. Gene is on the P90X Journey and really doing well!

I met a teacher in the neighborhood who wants to get herself back in shape & is going to help me put a Fit Club together at the school with her teacher buddies!

We went to dinner and ran into some other neighbors; she's doing P90X and just finished week 7 and is loving it! She's looking at starting her home based Team Beachbody coaching business as well, she figures she's already "coaching" a sister and several friends, kind of a no brainer.

Oh yeah, gave the young lady who served us Suzette's TBB business card, everybody can use a few extra bucks working part-time especially when you're a going to college!

Heck of a day!

You want to learn more about how you can change your physical health & your financial wellness? Let me know and we'll see if Team Beachbody is the right fit for you. The business works, the only question is; does it work for YOU? Let's find out!

Primal Blueprint update

Here's an update on my progress with the Primal Blueprint.

I've been on the Primal Blueprint diet for a little over 2 weeks and I'm down from 182 to 177. I didn't measure my BF but I'm definatly leaner, prolly around 8-9%.

I was able to manage the new program while on a 10 day spring break vacation, i just happen to get 8 awesome workouts in and still had a great time.

We, Suzette and I, always get great workouts in, you have ao much more available time so there is no rush and we just bring it! When you've done P90X for 10 rounds you tend to be a bit of a show-off at a resort hotel gym. ;). What can I say...

If you think you can't do the Primal with a busy schedule, that's really just an excuse, much like the excuses NOT to workout instead of making reasons TO.

"Easy to do, but also easy not to do".

I choose "DO"!

More updates to come!

Team Coach Opt In

Attention all Team Beachbody team members! If you're part of my rapidly growing Team Beachbody coaching team please provide me with your contact information so I can make sure you're getting all the Coaching updates. The awesome news is that we're growing really fast! The downside, if you can call it that, is that I can't keep up with insuring I have everyone's email addresses in my system.

This information will only be used so I can easily update everyone on any new coach business, updates on successes other team coaches are having with their business, etc.

Thanks,

Brad

One Pound of Fat

Sitting our hotel room this morning, I'm getting my reading in before we're off to Legoland. Suzette recalled a story her first roommate in collage had posted to the bulletin board in the room.

Enjoy your day!

----------------------

One Pound of Fat

Hello! Do you know me? If you don't, you should. I am ONE POUND OF FAT, and I am the happiest pound of FAT that you would ever want to meet! Want to know why? It's because no one ever wants to lose me! After all, I am only ONE POUND OF FAT. Just ONE POUND. Everyone wants to lose 3 or 5 or 15 pounds, but never ONLY one. So, I just stick around and happily keep you. Then I am free to add to myself, ever so slyly, so that you never seem to notice... That is, until I have grown to 10, 20 or even 30 pounds in weight... YES... it is fun being ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT... left to do just as I please.

So, when you weigh in, go ahead... just keep on saying, "Oh I only lost one pound." (As if that is so terrible.) For you see, if you do this, you will encourage others to hang around me because they will think that I am not worth losing. And I LOVE being around you... your arms, your legs, your chin, your hips, and every other part of you. HAPPY DAYS! After all, I am ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT!!!

One on One Back & Belly w/push ups!

Here's another hybrid Chest & Back workout for you to try. One on One Back & Belly with P90X Chest. (from chest & back)

Follow the workout normally however in between each set do a set of Max Rep push ups from the P90X Chest & Back workout.

I also did a couple modified push ups, I'm calling them circular push ups, (probably a real name for them but..) Here's how I did them. Starting at Plank, go down to one side, at the bottom slide over to the opposite side and then move up, repeat the movement but in the opposite direction. Be sure to move slower during the rep, not super slow but in control. I did this type push up with hands in standard width, wide and decline (using stability ball), FYI, I use the Push up Stands for greater range of motion. http://www.bit.ly/P90X_Stands

You should be able to get through this workout in around 35 minutes. The Back & Belly workout is a little over 36 minutes with warm-up and cool down. I was able to do it without pausing the DVD. Lots of "Tony chatting" going on.

Enjoy! Bring It!

One on One Bun Shaper Tricep Abs!

I've been doing a lot of mixing and matching with some workouts as of late, I'm not sure why, probably because I like a good challenge. Here's today's little gem, if you're looking for a new mix.

One on One Bun Shaper Tricep Abs

Do each One on One Bun Shaper move, pause and then from the P90X Shoulders & Arms & Chest Shoulders and Triceps workouts do the Triceps moves, starting with Triceps kickbacks, I also included a diamond push-up type move, keeping elbows in tight to your sides very similar to military push-ups but with hands close together.

Once you've completed the triceps move go right into a 30 rep Ab move. I used a combination of P90 Ab Ripper, Ab RipperX and Abs Core Plus moves. I focused on Ab moves going from upper to lower and then obliques and then repeating.

The workout should last you under 50 minutes.

This month you can start your One on One collection for only $.01! Doesn't get any easier then that!

Great start to the week!

I ran into someone special this morning and just wanted to share it with you.

This morning after I dropped the kids off at school I took our van to a nearby car wash to get the dirt and gunk off it from our trip skiing yesterday. After paying for the car wash I went to the waiting area and said hello to a guy already there. As I sit down he says, "you look familiar to me, you look like someone from the P90X infomercial".

"Yeah, thats me".

We did introductions and Anthony went on to tell me that he's on his second round of P90X and has gone from 300 lbs. to 247 and just LOVES the program! He has more energy and feels FANTASTIC! He said before he started the program he had sleep apnea, high blood pressure and when he met with his doctor the doc told him, "you're going to die if you don't do something". WOW, talk about a slap in the face!

Anthony is a true inspiration! He's a testament to what you can do if you DECIDE, COMMIT, and is SUCCEED! Anthony's dropped 53 lbs. in 4 1/2 months and feels GREAT! His goal is to get to around 185-190, after talking with him I have no doubt he'll reach that goal. I'm looking forward to watching his journey.

What a great way to start the week!
