Last Week of February Workout Schedule

I've been posting my weekly workout schedule to keep me in line AND since I'm not doing a defined Beachbody schedule just making it up as I go along I'm testing a theory. I'm focusing on making sure I get at least 3 days of resistance, 3 days of cardio and a rest day with at least one day incorporating yoga or stretching.

Here is this week's schedule, tell me what you think;

Monday: ChaLEAN Extreme Burn it Off & One on One Fountain of Youth Yoga
Tuesday: P90X Chest, Shoulders, & Tris with Ab Ripper X
Wednesday: P90X+ Abs Core Plus & ChaLEAN Extreme Burn Intervals
Thursday: P90X Back and Biceps with Ab Ripper X
Friday: One on One Plyo Legs
Saturday: P90X Cardio X
Sunday: One on One Fountain of Youth Yoga

Looking forward to this week, different but lots of familiarity. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts.

Call for weight-loss industry regulation

Every now and then I stumble on a news report that validates what I say all the time and what anyone who is serious about helping others become healthy and fit.

There really isn't a quick fix to weight loss. Proper diet, regular exercise and a support group works, every time it's tried! Decide.Commit.Succeed

Call for weight-loss industry regulation

Published: Feb. 19, 2009 at 2:00PM

EDMONTON, Alberta, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Two obesity experts in Canada say physicians and public health departments have an obligation to protect consumers from shady weight-loss practices.

Drs. Yoni Freedhoff of the University of Ottawa and Arya Sharma of the University of Alberta said that weight loss should be overseen by licensed and regulated health professionals, the Regina (Saskatchewan) Leader-Post reports.

Sharma adds that a product should raise red flags to consumers if it promises weight loss of 2 or more pounds a week for longer than a month without dieting or exercise or if it claims substantial weight loss with no change in diet.

"The $50 billion North American weight-loss industry comprises a morass of fantastical claims of products and programs promising quick, easy, long-lasting results," the researchers write in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"Given this wealth of magical weight-loss aids, why is obesity still a problem? Perhaps because magic exists solely within consumers' hopes and dreams, which many commercial weight-loss providers happily exploit."

Any product that says that if you use it for a while, it will cause permanent weight loss is nonsense because that doesn't work even for surgery, Sharma says.

"If I staple your stomach and then unstaple it after 10 years, the weight is going to come back," Sharma says.

Here is another good article for you to check out regarding the same issue of regulating the weight loss industry.

The Straight Dope: P90X Better Than Steroids!

I'm sure many of you are seeing and hearing more talk about P90X. You're hearing folks from all walks of life raving about "The X". This program has gone far beyond it's initial demographic of athletes wanting to challenge themselves.

Steve Edwards ~ 90x Better than Steroids!
P90X Better Than Steroids!

The X is gettin' some serious love lately. My dad calls the other night and says he watching a show in the Giants and two pitchers, Zito and Wilson, are doing 90X. Tony calls me the other day to get my opinion on something because NBC is coming over to film a segment on Wii and wants the X perspective. He calls me again, a couple of days later from a plane on his way to do more X interviews and says, "Dude, you see the Grammys last night?" I hadn't but Cheryl Crow gave us a huge shout out from the red carpet.

Then, yesterday, I get this from Tony:
On WFAN, (biggest sports radio station in NYC) the host was talking this morning about A-Rod and said something to the effect of "his body was never that chiseled, not like he had a P90X body or anything".

This, for those of you not privy to the national news, is a reaction to Alex Rodriguez admitting that he'd been doing steroids. In reality, steroids don't make muscle, they just increase your body's ability to build muscle. But in a world where we see advertisements to "build muscle without steroids" as if the public thinks it's impossible, it's nice to get a little validity for our system. Anyone can have an X body. All it takes is a little structure and a lot of hard work.

Note: Jon Congdon (our President) sent this and I think it's a nice addition:

Everything you see about P90X that might appear to be PR is "organic" -- meaning that we don't pay for PR, and don't hire celebrities or athletes to do it, or talk about it. It's advertised on TV, in magazines sometimes, and more and more on the Internet, but we don't do PR. If Cheryl Crow, or Usher, or an MLB, NHL or NFL athlete buy it, they buy it just like everyone else and either because they saw the infomercial or a friend told them. That's what's so amazing about the P90X phenomenon of late.

The achievement of your goal is assured the moment you commit yourself.

"The achievement of your goal is assured the moment you commit yourself".

I found that on the web and thought it was perfect.

On Wednesday I banged out P90X Shoulders & Arms w/ARX. You know after doing the workouts so many times that you kind of get set in the weight you lift and the number of reps you do, right? I'm no different, just push play, do 8-10 reps of the same weight, get a good pump and then done.

I took a different approach Wednesday; I decided I'd go beyond that comfort level and weight I wouldn't normally do. I'm happy to say that I was able to do 60lbs single arm full supination concentration curls for 8 good reps, twice! Big number for me, not a world record but also a number I've never done before.

Don't get complacent with your workouts if you're looking to push past a fitness barrier, do that extra couple reps or go up in weight, see what you can do; you'll be surprised what you can achieve!

One One One Program Review

Here's my review of the One on One with Tony Horton workouts from an ealier post;

Killer Abs is part of the One on One with Tony Horton program.

The group of workouts is quickly become one of my favorite. I'm a weight lifting 101 kind of guy and some of this stuff is simple and basic.

One of the routines, P90 Road Warrior is much like the P90 series stuff so if you're familiar with P90 you'll know what to expect but he's designed it to be done with one resistance band, no weights. You can use weights but it's for the "Road Warrior".

Other workouts include.

Thirty Fifteen Routine: which I've already commented about, 24 total sets of pushups and pullups!

Just Arms: Biceps, Triceps and forearms, I like it but found it just a little slow and get more out of the P90X Shoulders and Arms workout, but if you're looking for an arm routine, it's a killer.

Killer Abs: Is just that, KILLER! You do Ab Ripper 200 and Ab RipperX, only difference is you're doing 20 reps on the Ab RipperX routine and Tony forgets to do Wide leg or Crossed Leg situps. About 25 mintues total.

Plyo Legs: Put Plyometrics and the Legs portion of Legs and Back together. There are several new moves but if you're looking to blast your legs & a$$ well this is the one! My legs were sore for 3 days afterwards!

Fountain of Youth Yoga: Tony breaks down YogaX into about 45 minutes which includes stretching and a little "abba-dabba", some great ab work at the end...."it's a beautiful thing", (he says that A LOT in this workout for some reason)

Super Cardio 5-6 Much like the P90 Master's Series workout but a step above. You start out with a little Yoga warmup and then its 4 moves done 3 times with 3 rotations. It's a great cardio burn. I've added the Fountain of Youth Yoga right after this to do what I call, "Sweaty Yoga". I don't do the cool down from the cardio, just jump into the yoga. Good Stuff!

These are great workouts to add to the collection of P90, P90X, & P90X+. There is no nutritional program and or specific fitness rotation for these, wanted to clarify that.

There's my quick review.

Road Warrior Workout Schedule

After a week of circuit training and increased flexibility training with Yoga we'll be heading to Utah for a visit with family and 3 days of skiing.

I'm was planning on doing a week of Classic P90X but after futher thought and consideration of the time schedule I've revised the schedule a bit. I really love having all the different Beachbody workouts to mix and match to make something work.

Monday: One on One with Tony Horton Thirty Fifteen Routine & Killer Abs
Tuesday: Interval X
Wednesday: P90X Shoulders & Arms & Turbo Jam AbsJam
Thursday: One on One Super Cardio 5-6 & Fountain of Youth Yoga,
Friday: Skiing & Fountain of Youth Yoga
Saturday: Skiing & One on One P90 Road Warrior
Sunday: Skiing & Fountain of Youth Yoga
Monday: Rest Day / Travel

I'm throwing in the Yoga more to workout the kinks from the day's skiing and to get in a little abdominal work. We'll see how that plan and this old man holds up.

I'll try to get some pictures of the Utah slopes! :)

LAP-BAND for the not so Morbidly Obese

***********Rant from Brad***************

LAP-BAND procedure for people 30 pounds overweight!

Today Suzette and I went to lunch and ran into one of our neighbors, she mentioned that she had a girl friend in LA who’s husband did gastric bypass surgery, they were in the process of starting up a new company that was going to focus on the LAP-BAND procedure for celebrities and other folks with a lot of extra cash to blow.

Now that's not such a big deal as we see the super rich and over-indulged Hollywood types spend insane amounts of money on lavish things most of us can't comprehend. The surprising thing was that this start up was going to be focusing on people who are not morbidly obese but for those people who are 30-50 lbs. overweight!

People don’t get 30+ lbs overweight overnight, why is it that they feel it’s easier to have an intrusive procedure done that will likely take just as long to produce results as establishing a healthy, active lifestyle that incorporates good nutritional habits and exercise?

She mentioned that the LAP-BAND process was already being done on some Brazilian models and others who aren't your traditional candidate for such a procedure.

The FDA is currently investigating the procedure for those who are only 30-50 lbs. overweight but in my opinion it will be allowed to take place with little resistance.

It just never ceases to amaze me how some folks will go to such extreme measures to lose weight. Consider the health issues of reducing the size of ones digestive system, not to mention the overall on-going costs. Just UNREAL!

How many people have we seen or read about on this message board that has had incredible results from proper diet, exercise and determination to succeed? The list it too many to mention, wait until you see this years Million Dollar Body Game finalists, you’ll be amazed at some of the transformations!

I’m just one of those people who believe that there is NO substitute for hard work and dedication to your overall health and fitness. I’ve also never been 30+ lbs overweight so I also don’t know the struggles associated with overcoming excessive weight so I can only look at my own experience and formulate an opinion.

Sorry for the rant, just couldn’t help myself.
